Chapter 13 - 12 Light Seconds

Portent

Physicists love their invariants. They hunt for them like buried treasure. They lovingly name them, “Conservation of Energy”, “Conservation of Mass”, etc. An invariant is that which doesn’t change while all around it does. They are reliable guideposts in the search for the laws of physics.

Significance

If there is a way for all observers to agree on a privileged frame of reference, even if it is only local, determined by parameters of the situation (not a universal frame of reference), one where an entangled pair of photons, headed in opposite directions, have the same frequency, then they can agree on the temporal ordering of the detection events.

Research Lineage - The 12 Lightsecond Thought Experiment

The original paper introducing the 12 light second thought experiment was presented at the 42nd annual Joint Propulsion Conference in 2006.
